Who am I becoming as a leader and how has that shifted since this course began? My desire and willpower to become an effective leader has shifted, because I strive to become a better leader. A good leader develops through a never ending process of self-study, education, training, and experience. As a new supervisor who is striving to be a great leader, one of my main goals is to inspire my staff into higher levels of teamwork, which can be acquired through continual work and study. I feel it is my duty as a good leader to constantly be working and studying to improve my leadership skills.
To be a respected leader, I will continue to concentrate on who I am such as beliefs and character; what I know such as Jobs, tasks, and human nature; and what I do such as implementing, motivating, and providing direction. I believe that I possess much strength that makes me a good leader. One of my strengths is that I constantly seek responsibility and take responsibility for my actions. I always ask f I could help out in my respective service for which I work. I want people to look up to me and respect me and I know that things do not always go as planned, and I never blame others for my mistakes.
Also, I always try and analyze the situation I am In and find some way to correct the problem before moving on to the next challenge. What have I learned about myself or my leadership as a result of this course? I believe that one of my best strengths is that I make timely decisions. I never procrastinate and I always plan ahead and try and give myself ample time to get tasks completed and make a decision. In all my individual assignments and team projects, I try to set the example and act as a good role model. I believe that If one person slacks. Everyone In the group will model to that person, and that Is never the erection you want an effective group to go in. When working in a group, I also make sure that everyone is informed. I am usually the one sending out the emails to delegate tasks and making sure that everyone is up to speed. Lastly, I always ensure that these tasks are understood and accomplished. Being a good leader entails that you care about your group members and want everyone to be successful. An opportunity for Improvement for me Is my tendency to be a follower In a big group, rather than a leader. Ere loud, strong headed and overly confident people make me not want to take control as much for fear that they will not like my ideas. Another opportunity for improvement for me is communication. I am always very good at paying attention in class and at work; however, if I hear the teacher or my boss give requirements for a project, I sometimes assume that everyone else is paying equal attention. I need to make a more conscience effort to make sure that everyone Is communicating with one another and Is aware of what needs to be accomplished.
This ensures the team will be building a healthy relationship and working together. Lastly, I have to remember that everyone is different and that we all don’t approach tasks in the same way. I must use my sense of Judgment to assess each person and determine what kind of work load I honestly think they will complete effectively based on their schedule. If the work Is not completed when It Is supposed been done and make sure that they understand that this is going to put us behind. I always want people to like me, so giving constructive criticism and approaching people would be another opportunity for improvement.
What success have I made in moving closer to my development goals as a leader? I have been trying to continuously be a good role model by being an example to all my staff. I am making an effort to give feedback regularly to my staff and trying to maintain a positive attitude toward work as negativism will not help me out. A positive attitude always helps staff to visualize a common goal. A good leader always shares their vision and knowledge, should be able to implement a plan and share it with others, take responsibility for the effectiveness of the plan, and should also accept the criticism that may be encountered.
I have always been a team player and to be an effective team player, it is important to be able to balance the needs of my staff and my own. I continue to be opportune to my staff and will do everything I can to encourage their success. Being dependable is an extremely important quality as well as being punctual. I know that my staff is relying on me and it is important to follow through on all of my commitments. Persistence is also important for success. No matter what I do, there will be obstacles so staying focused and never giving up is important.
What is my leadership edge and how can I leverage my strengths in the service of my on-going development and learning? Ethical choices are a main concern for my leadership. In all ethical choices, a trader’s thought pattern will influence what action he or she takes. People’s patterns of thinking will be influenced by their values, what they say to themselves, and what they imagine will happen in to their actions. Ethical leadership discerns right from wrong and acting in alignment with such Judgment.
As a good leader, I have strong values and am more likely to act ethically than a bad leader with weak or non-existent value system. When faced with challenging decisions, bad leaders who have not internalized a value system will probably respond with more variability than will one who has such a strong value system. When I have a difficult problem, I usually react by reducing the problem to simple terms. I will search for a solution that is both satisfactory and sufficient. Bad leaders are often not able to process all of the information needed to reach an optimal decision.
Instead, they tend to make slow decision that are not understandable and do not show any related support of their decisions. Bad leaders often come to a solution that is unsatisfactory and insufficient. I believe that I am a good leader and good leaders are not know-it-alls, we always feel that there is more to learn and have a willingness to admit mistakes. Unlike a ad leader, good leaders select the right strategy for the right situation, even when the pressure is overwhelming. Bad leaders have a low energy level and are not good motivators.
They are also not smart enough to know that many times they will have to alter what they originally planned. As a growing leader, I must understand the individuality of employees and the dynamics of group interaction to get the most out of a particular group. It is essential to be able to assess group strengths and weaknesses and use them to the best of weaknesses, they Just act off of what they think is sufficient for the group as a whole. A good leader will also be able to put the right people together in order to form a more productive group.
She/he will know whether the group needs to be homogeneous for a quick solution or more heterogeneous to solve a problem, which needs more creativity and diversity. What is my leadership project and why did I select it? Why am I passionate about what I selected? My leadership project is to meet with my chief for at least an hour at the end of the week to discuss techniques that worked and did not work. My chief can address situations to his direct reports aggressively and this in turn, does not motivate his Taft.
When he speaks to his direct reports, he can be abrupt and belittle individuals. He did not realize that his leadership style was not effective, until his boss had a meeting with him. My chiefs boss informed him about his ineffective leadership and how several of his direct reports were looking at other Jobs as a result. After my chief met with his boss, he came to me and apologized because I was one of his direct reports that was looking at other Jobs. I felt that his leadership was hindering me from being a good leader.
During this meeting, I had the opportunity to vive him examples of what was making me feel the way I did. For example, when I try to inform him of certain tasks or data being requested by a particular department such as Quality Management, he would immediately say “What is the bottom line”. He never lets me or anyone else finish their sentence. Another example is when his direct reports are doing their Jobs; he wants it done his way or no way. This can be very problematic, because he is not completing the Job to its entirety.
As a result, the requesting department usually responds by saying that directions weren’t followed or we need to make changes to information that our arrive provided them with. Even though it is important for our chief to have an understanding about what his direct reports do in their respective positions, he is not aware of every task and the necessary steps that must be taken to complete a Job like we are. So far, my chief and I have been meeting on Fridays to discuss the way we both approached situations during the week and what approach worked and did not work.
I am passionate about my Job and would like to continue working in my current service, because I feel that I can make a difference. Change within the employees and ark processes are long overdue, but I have made significant changes since I have been in the service. Employee morale has changed and work processes have improved which is better for the patients and the service. What is my intended outcome for this project? The weekly meetings with my chief will help improve communication, our leadership styles, and employee morale. My chief is the heart of the department and must maintain his professionalism at all times.
In turn, the staff will respect him more and be committed to the service and their Job. How will I apply what I have learned about leadership in this project? As a women leader, I am more venturesome and less interested in what “has been” and more interested in what “can be. ” Women usually will run the risk of occasionally being wrong in order to get things done. When it comes to decision- leadership style. As a leader, I usually am able to think beyond the moment. This principle will encourage me as a leader to consider both the short-and long-term consequences of my actions.
A bad leader will only think that a risk taken will affect you at that present moment, but a good leader may consider the risk taken being bad now and great for the plans they have in the future. A good leader is always looking out for the best interest of both the employees and organization not only now, but for the long term. There is a very important characteristic that I have not expounded on yet and will get to it now. Webster defines charisma as “a personal magic of leadership arousing special popular loyalty or enthusiasm for a public figure or special magnetic charm or appeal”.
A good leader must be charismatic. A good leader should not have to try to make people follow him/her, instead a follower should not be able to explain why they follow a good leader, but know they should. Doll Hitler was not a well liked man, but he was one of the most charismatic speakers of all time and he knew how to get people to follow him. The people had to know what he was preaching, but there was Just something about him and the way he spoke that could command a group of people to listen to him and follow his ideals. Charisma is a trait a person is born with.
A person can’t be taught how to be charismatic they Just are, so this poses for a good question. Are some people Just born to lead? I think so, but this does not mean that a person cannot learn the necessary skills to become a leader. Charisma is Just a vital part to being a good leader. A follower wants to look up to someone. They will not follow a person that does not offer some sort of awe quality, which is exactly what charisma is. Strong leaders help to grow and develop new strong leaders as well. An organization needs strong leaders such as myself to train employees on how to be strong leader themselves.
Without good leaders there could be a break in the chain. The leaders of today need to be able to teach the leaders of tomorrow how to do things the proper way and how to lead in an ethical manner. This is vital in the production of good managers for our future. A good leader will know how not only to communicate through word, but through their actions to our future leaders to evolve them into better leaders, which can only make the future brighter for organizations. What is my highest aspiration as a leader as I leave this course? My highest aspiration as a leader is having knowledge about the qualities of a good and bad leader.
A leader is someone who helps others achieve more than they ever thought was possible. There are many types of leaders in the world that help others daily. The issue that matters too many followers is whether or not their leader is a good or bad leader. When it comes to leading there are different styles that one may choose to be effective. The qualities of a good leader may include having self-knowledge, committing to others, the willingness to look out for support of others, being open to change, and the desire to go the extra mile.
Fulfilling these qualities, I can achieve results without sacrificing long-term organizational viability or employee commitment. As a leader, I can create an environment of collaboration that produces timely, high quality ere to continue in the future. A good leader recognizes that employees have choices and encourages them to look at other opportunities. A bad leader will not encourage employees to look at other opportunities because they will feel as if they are working against themselves. A bad leader however, will not have any of the characteristics that a good leader will have.
Basically a bad leader is the opposite of what a good leader would be. The most effective way of developing a leadership style is to learn from others. As well as helping you gain competencies faster, an appropriate mentor can broaden self- wariness and understanding of how you might be more influential. Think carefully about who has the skills you wish to develop and would be willing to share their expertise, because picking up the wrong skills will immediately give you the title of a bad leader. The majority of what we learn as a leader is from what we observe from other people.
As a leader, people will be focusing on their life, both professionally and personally, as an example of how to act themselves. If you want to see your team with exceptional personal qualities that you admire, then make sure that you yourself are demonstrating those same qualities. Your followers will mirror back the qualities that you display towards them. A true leader is committed towards serving their team and does what’s necessary to push the team closer to that ultimate vision. Along the same note, a leader must never complain in front of their team because that shows a lack of direction.
An officer never gripes to his troops, he gripes to his superiors, while patting his troops on the back for doing a Job well done. True leadership means the people, who have the ability to lead even if they do not have a formal authority. So, what is the single most important factor that makes leaders? It is role modeling, which makes true leaders. In fact, one can be a role model at whatever level he or she is. When people see that you say what you do, they start following you – not only your acts; but words also. That is the credibility you earn as a role model.
Still, nobody can ever be perfect. Let people know that failing and falling is a natural part of life and you are not a super human. Do your best as a human being and remain one! When I am old and on my deathbed, how will I know I have achieved it? A great leader does not only see people as they are, they see people as how they could be. A true leader encourages his/her team to take on new responsibilities and to grow and learn because that investment in the personal growth of their team will pay off substantially in the future. Providing support and advice is a learned art form.
One way people receive input is from mentors who provide a listening ear and a nudge in the right direction. Leaders are also mentors who serve as a coach and role model. In this way, well- rounded perspectives and useful wisdom are offered. Most mentor-protog relationships include an exchange of ideas and information to assist with career or personal development. Mentors help protogs accomplish specific goals. Maneuvering the workplace, for instance, does not come from a manual or on-the- job-training but often from an informal professional rapport and guidance offered by a mentor. Much like an academic adviser.
An effective mentor fosters an exchange of creative ideas and professional career growth insight. It’s really someone to “show the ropes. ” Beyond providing customized assistance, a mentor points out career development strategies and recommends other professional contacts. In this way, the protog further increases a knowledge base and personal development. I know I would have achieved being a great or successful leader if I was able to see an individual for who they were and could be, encouraged others to take on new responsibilities and accomplish goals, and was an effective coach and mentor.
What is the leadership legacy I want to leave behind me when I die? The path towards living a life of significance demands that you become an exceptional leader. I want people to remember that I inspired to be a great leader and those who want to be a great leader must start working on building their leadership qualities as outlined above and never stop building on those skills for the est. of their living days like I did. Inspiring leaders should be aware that the better leader he/she becomes, the more people will hear and follow my message and the greater positive change I can influence on the world as part of my legacy.
As said, all leaders must work hard to build the future, for that is where they and their people will spend the rest of their lives. By setting an example, leaders will be a good role model for their employees. They must not only hear what they are expected to do, but also see. We must become the change we want to see. As I reflect back on my leadership experiences I believe that I eave always tried to take initiative and get things done.
I believe that I am always understanding of what other people have going on in their lives and I talk to them like a person and am very considerate. I try my hardest to be proficient at what I do and help others if they are lost. Lastly, I make a point to provide direction to the group, plan ahead, set goals, try to identify problems and come up with solutions. I believe a leader should always encourage the team to reach team goals as effectively as possible, through building relationships and inspiring their team members.
